Bringing inspiration to a standardized life.

My name is Isabel McLain. I am a high school senior currently living in Atlanta, Georgia. So you might wonder why I started a blog in the midst of my hardest and busiest semester. Well I’ve started a rebellion--a personal rebellion against the mechanical, formulaic academic system that focuses only on test scores and seems to only reward replication of facts and figures. I want…no, it is more than that. I need to be creative even in the midst of extreme academic and college app pressure. I don’t want my creativity to take a backseat to my SAT scores or GPA. So this blog is a way for me to be creative, expressive, and reflective…all without the pressure of a grade!
Creativity is becoming rare in our fast paced, microwave-instant society. The consequences of this are devastating. Whether it be consumerism, pure laziness, fear of failure, or whatever else, less and less people spend their time looking for inspiration to incite their passions and lead to new discoveries. Therefore, I decided to start this blog to bring inspiration to the “creatively unreachable” through art, music, quotes, articles, videos, reflective writing and more. Who knows, maybe more people will find ways to become more creative, and less obsessed with conformity and competition.

Fallins Whistles is a campaign for peace in the Congo. They partner only with native Congolese activists to try to bring relief and rehabilitation to the Congo. Right now, One of their partners is Mutaani, a startup radio station run by a young, ambitious team. Amidst a climate of propaganda, Mutaani work tirelessly to deliver uncensored daily content and music to Congolese listeners. And it’s catching on. Right now Mutaani is their city’s #1 station. They believe Mutaani is pioneering free expression in warzone. PledgeMusic shared our vision and helped us create a roster of artists signing on for peace in Congo.

Proceeds from PledgeMusic will outfit Mutaani’s new recording studio with the gear and instruments it needs to run. It is through the work in this studio that the rest of the world will hear the stories and music from Congo. Pledge to launching a facility that will inspire creativity and culture. Pledge to a new generation of local leaders working toward a Congo—free and at peace.

Creativity is the residue of time wasted.

For my very last art project for school, my class got the chance to add to the murals that already line our school’s hallways. We picked an inspirational person and a quote by them that we would feature! I personally chose Ken Robinson, someone who has greatly influenced this blog! I chose my favorite quote by him: “if you are not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original.” Inspiring, right? :) I chose Robinson not only because he has inspired me but because it is my quiet protest of the education system at my school. It’s terribly ironic that Ken Robinson, a man who stands for great education reform that goes against most of America’s system today, is on our walls at Riverwood. Maybe it will spur people to research him? Maybe it will do something more than just be another one of the portraits on our halls…

I define creativity as the process of having original ideas that have value.

My IB Examination was this Tuesday! It went really well I think, and felt really good to get over with. The interviewer and I got along really well. We had our art on exhibit for a little bit afterwards as well for the school to see and I thought I would post it up here! Enjoy:)

More street art! The first picture is by Hense, a street artist that my sister told me about. She saw him working on this very piece at the Richmond Street Art Festival near where she goes to college. I am really jealous that she got to see it!

The others are by Monsieur Qui, Bonom, Blu, and Nicer Bio.

People ask me, ‘Don’t you ever run out of ideas?’ In the first place, I don’t use ideas. Every time I have an idea it’s too limiting, and usually turns out to be a disappointment. But I haven’t run out of curiosity.

Control, apparently, is not the answer. People who need certainty in their lives are less likely to make art that is risky, subversive, complicated, iffy, suggestive, or spontaneous. What’s really needed is nothing more than a broad sense of what you are looking for, some strategy for how to find it, and an overriding willingness to embrace mistakes and surprises along the way. Simply put, making art is chancy- it doesn’t mix well with predictability. Uncertainty is the prerequisite to succeeding.
